Favourite Worst Nightmare

With only three albums and a forth on the way. The Arctic Monkeys have become one of my top three favourite English bands. They hit the music scene with their smash hit "I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor" and since then have in my own personal opinion Matured as a Alternative Rock band.

Favourite Worse Nightmare is their second album and also their best to date. The album for me is a much darker album. Not in the sense that it's not at all lighthearted but with their first album, I felt as if I was listening to a bunch of hormonal teenagers rock out in their garage (Not at all a bad thing). I am drawn to darker subject matter in songs and lyrics and this album must have been written at a time when Lead Singer Alex Turner was going through some more darker times.

The choices for my lyrics in this post are Do Me A Favour, Old Yellow Bricks & 505. They are the best songs on the album and like I stated above they are also the most rich in lyrical content. Two of them I perceive as songs about the ending of a relationship/tiring of the person you love and the curious nature of cheating on your partner and one is what I have gathered as my own opinion to be a song about escaping a life that has grown to small and wishing for something better. An escape from the past.

DO ME A FAVOUR

Well the morning was complete
There was tears on the steering wheel dripping on the seat
Several hours or several weeks
I'd have the cheek to say they're equally as bleak!

It's the beginning of the end
The car went up the hill
And disappeared around the bend
Ask anyone they'll tell you that
It's these times that it tends
To start to breaking off
To start to fall apart
Hold on to your heart

Do me a favour, break my nose!
Do me a favour, tell me to go away!
Do me a favour, and stop asking questions!

She walked away while her shoes were untied
And the eyes were all red
You could see that we'd cried
And I watched and I waited
Till she was inside
Forcing a smile and waving goodbye

Curiosity becomes a heavy load
Too heavy to hold
Too heavy to hold
Curiosity becomes a heavy load
Too heavy to hold
Will force you to be cold

Do me a favour and ask if you need some help
She said "Do me a favour and stop flattering yourself"
And to tear apart the ties that bind
Perhaps "fuck off" might be too kind!
Perhaps "fuck off" might be too kind!

OLD YELLOW BRICKS

Old yellow bricks
Love's a risk
Quite the little escapologist
Looked so miffed
When you wish
For a thousand places better than this

You are the fugitive
But you don't know what you're running from
You can't kid us
And you couldn't trick anyone
Houdini, love you don't know what you're running away from

Who wants to sleep in the city that never wakes up?
Blinded by nostalgia
Who wants to sleep in the city that never wakes up?

She was enraged by the way
That the emperor puts traps in the cage
And the days she being dull
Lead to nights reading beer bottles

You're such a fugitive
But you don't know what you're running from
You can't kid us
And you couldn't trick anyone
Houdini, love you don't know what you're running away from

Who wants to sleep in the city that never wakes up?
Blinded by nostalgia
Who wants to sleep in the city that never wakes up?

You're at a loss
Just because
It wasn't all that you thought it was

You are the fugitive but you don't know what you're running away from

She said I want to sleep in the city that never wakes up
And revel in nostalgia
I know I said he wants to sleep in the city that never wakes up but
Dorothy was right though

505

I'm going back to 505
If it's a 7 hour flight or a 45 minute drive
In my imagination you're waiting, lying on your side
With your hands between your thighs

Stop and wait a sec
When you look at me like that my darling
What did you expect
I'd probably still adore you with your hands around my neck
Or I did last time I checked

Not shy of a spark
The knife twists at the thought that I should fall short of the mark
Frightened by the bite though it's no harsher then the bark
The middle of adventure is such a perfect place to start

I'm going back to 505
If it's a 7 hour flight or a 45 minute drive
In my imagination you're waiting, lying on your side
With your hands between your thighs

But I crumble completely when you cry
It seems like once again you've had to greet me with goodbye
I'm always just about to go and spoil the surprise
Take my hands off of your eyes too soon

I'm going back to 505
If it's a 7 hour flight or a 45 minute drive
In my imagination you're waiting, lying on your side
With your hands between your thighs and a smile
